Police Investigate Disappearance of Motorcyclist in Maryland County

The Liberia National Police (LNP) in Maryland County have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a motorcyclist in the Barrobo Statutory District, with three individuals currently under police scrutiny.

According to police reports, the missing motorcyclist, only identified as Obadiah, is a resident of Dugboken District #3, Maryland County. The incident reportedly occurred while he was transporting passengers to the Juluken #1 gold mining area.

Police disclosed that on January 8, 2026, the Maryland County Detachment confirmed receiving a report involving Obadiah and three individuals identified as Isaac Gwele, Fred Bartoe III, and Ackeel Bartoe. The group was said to be traveling to the gold mining area in search of better livelihood opportunities and to support their families.

Earlier, preliminary findings from interior LNP officers revealed that on January 5, 2025, Obadiah was contacted in Dugboken to transport two men to the gold mines in pursuit of greener pastures. Subsequently, the motorcyclist reportedly decided to go along with a friend for companionship, with the intention of safely completing the trip and returning home.

However, during the journey, the motorcycle reportedly developed a mechanical fault along the highway. While efforts were being made to fix the issue, Obadiah allegedly ran into the nearby bushes without saying a word and did not return. Meanwhile, the three suspects, along with Isaac Gwele, are currently in the custody of the Liberia National Police and are expected to be forwarded to court, as the matter is said to be beyond the police’s jurisdiction.

Moreover, police records indicate that since the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 5, 2025, community members including elders and youths have conducted two separate search efforts in an attempt to locate the missing motorcyclist or recover his body.
