Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has taken another step toward strengthening its reputation as a leading academic institution in West Africa with the commissioning of newly constructed guest chalets designed to accommodate visiting scholars, researchers, and institutional partners from across the region and beyond.
The newly completed facilities, unveiled at the university’s Scholars’ Lodge in Akure, are expected to improve the university’s capacity to host academic conferences, collaborative research programs, and international engagements.
The project was officially commissioned by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Nora Ladi Daduut, who described the development as a reflection of strategic leadership and institutional progress.
University officials said the project includes several modern, fully furnished chalets built specifically to enhance hospitality services for scholars and guests visiting the institution from different parts of Nigeria and other countries.
Speaking during the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Adenike Oladiji noted that the new accommodations represent the first purpose-built guest lodging facilities in the university’s history. She emphasized that the project demonstrates FUTA’s broader ambition to position itself as a globally competitive institution capable of supporting academic exchange and regional collaboration.
According to the university administration, the development was financed through internally generated revenue, a move officials say reflects prudent financial planning and the institution’s commitment to infrastructure growth without overreliance on external funding.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that older lodge facilities are undergoing renovation to align with the standards of the newly completed chalets, further modernizing the university’s hospitality infrastructure.
Observers within Nigeria’s higher education sector say investments in accommodation and conference facilities are becoming increasingly important as universities compete to attract international partnerships, research opportunities, and academic tourism across Africa.
During the commissioning event, members of the Governing Council praised the transformation of the Scholars’ Lodge, describing it as part of a wider effort to improve the university’s learning and administrative environment.
Council member Joseph Achede remarked that the project represented a remarkable upgrade compared to the condition of the facilities just a few years ago.
The construction was handled by PRODEMICS Global Investment, the contractor responsible for delivering the new structures.
The commissioning ceremony attracted university officials, stakeholders, staff, and guests, many of whom described the initiative as a strategic investment capable of boosting FUTA’s regional influence in higher education, research, and institutional development.
