Credit or Continuity? Gray Accuses Boakai Government of Rebranding Weah-Era Solar Project

A political dispute is emerging over ownership of Liberia’s latest energy milestone, as opposition figure Moses Acarous Gray accuses the Boakai administration of claiming credit for a project he says was initiated under former President George Manneh Weah.

Following the June 5 unveiling of a solar facility at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, Gray took to social media to challenge the narrative surrounding the project. He alleged that the initiative was conceived, financed, and set in motion during the Weah administration, long before the current government assumed office.

Describing officials of the Unity Party-led government in harsh terms, Gray argued that the project’s foundation—including funding arrangements and early development steps—was already secured prior to 2024. In his view, the current administration is presenting inherited work as its own achievement.

He further claimed that within its first two and a half years, the Boakai administration has yet to independently initiate and complete a major development project, suggesting that its current focus is on rebranding past efforts rather than delivering new ones.

Gray insisted that documentation exists to support his claims, maintaining that the project’s origins are a matter of record rather than opinion.

As of now, the Boakai administration has not directly responded to the allegations. However, officials have continued to highlight the solar project as part of broader efforts to expand electricity access and strengthen Liberia’s energy infrastructure.

The disagreement underscores a recurring issue in Liberian politics—whether national projects should be viewed through the lens of political ownership or as shared progress across administrations.
