PLEEBO CITY, Maryland County — Authorities in Maryland County have launched an investigation into allegations that a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a 47-year-old man in Pleebo City, a case that has renewed concerns about the protection of minors and workplace safety for young people across Liberia.
The suspect, identified as Lewis N. Walker, is reportedly employed as a driver with the International Bank (IB). He is currently the subject of an active police investigation following allegations made by the teenage survivor, who reported the incident to law enforcement authorities shortly after it allegedly occurred.
According to information provided by the survivor, the alleged assault took place during the morning hours of June 2, 2026, at a guesthouse in Pleebo City where she is employed as part of the maintenance staff.
The teenager stated that she was carrying out her regular cleaning responsibilities when the suspect allegedly approached her. She further alleged that Walker had previously made advances toward her, which she said she had repeatedly rejected.
According to her account, another employee was present at the location for a brief period before leaving. The survivor alleged that following the departure of the staff member, the suspect’s conduct became inappropriate and escalated into an encounter that she says occurred without her consent.
The matter was subsequently reported to local authorities, prompting an official investigation into the allegations.
Law enforcement officials in Maryland County have confirmed that they are actively investigating the case and that the suspect is being processed in accordance with Liberia’s legal procedures.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the ongoing investigation, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the need to protect the privacy of the minor involved.
The case has drawn attention from child protection advocates and community members, who stress the importance of ensuring that survivors of sexual violence receive appropriate support, protection, and access to justice.
Advocates continue to emphasize that cases involving minors require careful handling to safeguard the dignity, safety, and well-being of those affected.
They also note that survivors of sexual violence should have access to comprehensive medical care, psychosocial support, counseling services, and legal assistance as investigations proceed.
Community leaders and rights organizations have repeatedly called for stronger protections for young people in workplaces and public spaces, arguing that safeguarding minors must remain a national priority.
The incident has also reignited discussions about the need for increased public awareness regarding gender-based violence, child protection, and reporting mechanisms available to victims and their families.
Liberian laws provide criminal penalties for sexual offenses, particularly those involving minors, and authorities have pledged to investigate such allegations thoroughly and impartially.
As the investigation continues, officials are encouraging anyone with relevant information that could assist the inquiry to cooperate with law enforcement authorities.
The Liberia National Police and child protection agencies have urged members of the public to report incidents of abuse and exploitation and to support efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals from harm.
Meanwhile, the survivor is reportedly receiving assistance and support as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The case remains under active investigation, and no court determination has yet been made regarding the allegations. Authorities say further information will be released as the legal process unfolds.
For many residents and advocates, the case serves as another reminder of the importance of vigilance, accountability, and community cooperation in addressing violence against women and children and ensuring that justice is pursued through the rule of law.
