An unexpected act of generosity by former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has come to light after prominent Liberian media practitioner John Kollie disclosed that the former leader personally financed his emergency medical evacuation abroad following a devastating stroke.
Speaking during a recent church service, Kollie recounted the life-threatening ordeal that nearly ended his career and life. The veteran journalist explained that after suffering the stroke, he was admitted to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where his condition left him partially immobilized and struggling to speak. As the medical situation worsened, the financial demands for specialized treatment quickly became overwhelming for his family.
With limited options and the need for urgent medical intervention, Kollie’s wife used his mobile phone to contact Weah directly, hoping the former president might offer assistance in their moment of crisis.
According to Kollie, Weah answered the call immediately and did not hesitate to extend support. The former president reportedly pledged to take responsibility for the medical expenses, a decision that dramatically altered the course of events.
Weah’s intervention enabled Kollie’s swift transfer from the JFK Medical Center to a specialized neurological treatment facility in Accra, Ghana, where he could access advanced medical care. The former president covered the full cost of the international treatment and also paid for three airline tickets to allow Kollie to travel with family members accompanying him.
Addressing the congregation, Kollie emphasized that the gesture was especially remarkable because he and Weah did not share any close personal relationship or political alliance before the medical emergency.
“I never expected such kindness from someone I did not have a close relationship with,” Kollie said, crediting both divine intervention and Weah’s generosity for giving him another chance at life.
Now recovering and able to walk again, the seasoned journalist described the experience as a profound reminder that compassion can emerge from the most unexpected places.
