A disturbing incident has shaken Grand Kru County following the death of a 43-year-old man, identified as James Doe, who reportedly took his own life while in police custody. The Liberia National Police (LNP) Grand Kru Detachment discovered Doe’s lifeless body hanging inside a detention cell on January 14, 2026.
Doe had earlier been arrested by members of the Community Watch Forum (CWF) and subsequently handed over to the police on allegations of rape. The alleged victim, whose identity remains protected, reportedly confirmed the assault during police investigations. According to preliminary accounts, the woman’s 22-year-old son reportedly caught Doe in the act and raised an alarm, leading to the suspect’s immediate arrest.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Doe’s death, focusing on detention conditions, custodial oversight, and the mental health safeguards available to detainees. The incident has reignited public concern over custodial responsibility and justice system protocols.
As the community struggles to come to terms with the tragedy, the LNP has assured the public of a thorough investigation to establish accountability. Sympathy has been extended to the victim and her family as the legal process continues.
