October 9, 2025- Suzhou, China – The Suzhou Union of Liberian Students in China officially inducted its newly appointed leaders during a ceremony marked by inspiration, reflection, and a strong call for unity and excellence.

The highlight of the event was a moving keynote address delivered by Madam Ruphine Harmon, Vice President of the Liberian Students Union in China, whose words stirred emotion and motivation among attendees.

Addressing an audience of Liberian scholars from across Chinese universities, Madam Harmon urged students to embrace their purpose in China beyond academics, emphasizing the importance of personal growth, national representation, and community service.

“When I came to China, I had zero idea about YouTube,” she recounted humorously. “But when I learned, I realized this is a whole world out there — that’s where I started practicing my public speaking.” Her story, she explained, symbolized how students could transform challenges into opportunities for development.

“Our being in this country is not just for academics,” she stressed. “You belong here. You have a purpose here.”

The Vice President encouraged Liberian students to remain steadfast in their studies despite financial and emotional sacrifices made by their families back home. “Do your best and let God do the rest,” she said. “It’s not your place to do more than your ability allows, but always give your best effort.”

Turning her attention to female students, Madam Harmon delivered a particularly empowering message. “Allow your light to shine,” she urged. “Even if you’re doing something in your little corner, do it to the best of your ability.” Drawing from her own experience of rising through opportunities in the student community, she encouraged women to be confident and proud ambassadors of Liberia.

“Communication is not just about speaking; it’s about being understood,” she said. “We represent a whole nation here. When something happens, the first question is, ‘Which country are you from?’ That’s why we must carry ourselves with pride and dignity.”

Addressing the newly inducted officials, Madam Harmon reminded them that leadership is a sacred duty rooted in selflessness. “It’s always lonely at the top because you’re constantly thinking about others,” she noted. “There will be challenges, but remember that whatever you’re doing for the people, God will reward you.”

She called on the new leadership team to foster inclusivity, mentorship, and continuity within the organization. “Train as many people as possible,” she advised. “So that when you’re not available, others can step up. It’s not about any of us — it’s about service to humanity.”

Her heartfelt speech drew enthusiastic applause, with one attendee describing her as “a voice of the voiceless and an icon of Liberian women in China.”

“Because you belong here,” Madam Harmon concluded, “bring your full self. We need you — all of you.”

Following her remarks, Hon. Alexander Dumbai Joe, representing the Jiangsu Provincial Executive Committee, conducted the official induction of the new officers. In his address, Hon. Joe commended the union’s leadership and urged the newly appointed officials to serve with humility and collaboration.

“You have been given a mantle to serve,” he said. “You are not necessarily the best of men, but you have been given the privilege. Use it well, make your contribution, and set the path for those who will come after you. We can only achieve great things if we work together.”

The ceremony concluded with the formal oath-taking, as the new leaders pledged to uphold the values of the Liberian student community in China.

The event, rich with optimism and reflection, underscored a central message — that being a Liberian student in China extends far beyond academic achievement. It is a call to embody excellence, unity, and service in representing both self and nation.
