— Vows relentless war against narcotics
Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has announced the launch of a compulsory nationwide drug test for all its officers as part of sweeping reforms aimed at restoring accountability and credibility within the institution. The move comes under the leadership of the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OIC), Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T.M. Biago, who vowed to wage an uncompromising war against drug trafficking and abuse in Liberia.
In his first official statement on Tuesday, DCP Biago expressed gratitude to President Joseph N. Boakai for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the agency in its interim phase. He also acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Justice, pledging to uphold transparency, discipline, and integrity in steering the agency.
“As we take over the interim leadership of the LDEA, we are fully aware of the daunting challenges that lie ahead. Yet, we are equally confident that with determination, discipline, and collective effort, we shall overcome these challenges and restore the dignity, integrity, and effectiveness of this noble institution,” Biago said.
Describing the proliferation and abuse of illicit drugs as “one of the gravest national threats confronting Liberia,” the OIC warned that the crisis is destroying the nation’s youth, destabilizing communities, and undermining national security.
To strengthen accountability, Biago announced that every LDEA officer will undergo mandatory drug testing, stressing that those tasked with leading the fight must themselves be “beyond reproach.” He said this measure is critical in rebuilding public trust and ensuring the agency’s credibility.
Beyond internal reforms, Biago unveiled plans for intensified operations targeting drug traffickers and distributors. He announced the imminent launch of an Anti-Drugs Hotline to encourage citizens to provide intelligence that will support LDEA operations nationwide.
Calling on broader societal involvement, the OIC urged the Liberian media to play a proactive role in sensitizing communities about the dangers of drugs. “Your role in informing and educating the public is indispensable. We pledge transparency, accountability, and openness as we discharge this mandate on behalf of the Liberian people,” he stated.
Biago also issued a stern warning to traffickers and their networks: “To all drug traffickers, distributors, and those who profit from the destruction of lives, consider this your final warning: the LDEA will come after you with the full weight of the law. There will be no hiding place. We will pursue you relentlessly, prosecute you vigorously, and ensure that justice is served. The time of impunity is over.”
He further assured the public that the LDEA will collaborate closely with the Liberia National Police and other members of the Joint Security apparatus to maximize the effectiveness of anti-drug operations across the country.
The announcement marks a bold first step for the new LDEA leadership, signaling both internal reform and aggressive external action as Liberia intensifies its war on narcotics.
