A devastating fire has destroyed two houses in Zone 4A, Pleebo City, Maryland County, displacing several families and leaving the community in shock. The blaze erupted on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at about 4:00 p.m., quickly reducing both structures to ashes.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but eyewitnesses said the flames started in one home before spreading to the second. With the houses built close together and no firefighting equipment available, residents could do little to stop the inferno. “We tried using buckets of water and sand, but it was too strong. Within minutes, everything was gone,” said a witness.
While no deaths or major injuries were reported, the material loss is extensive. Families lost clothes, furniture, important documents, and other valuables, prompting an urgent need for relief.
Local leaders and representatives from the Maryland County administration visited the site to console victims and promised a full investigation. “We will work with relevant agencies to determine the root cause of this fire,” an official assured residents.
The incident has reignited frustration over the lack of a fire station in Pleebo City. Many residents believe the destruction could have been minimized if proper firefighting facilities were in place. “It is painful to watch people’s lifetime investments go down in flames while we stand helpless,” a community elder lamented.
Experts continue to urge communities to prioritize fire safety, including checking electrical connections, handling open flames carefully, and preparing water reserves for emergencies.
For now, Zone 4A remains in mourning, as affected families seek refuge with relatives and friends while awaiting assistance. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger fire safety infrastructure and preparedness in Maryland County and across Liberia.
