Shonan Kamakura General Hospital Welcomes President Boakai, Pledges Stronger Health Cooperation with Liberia

Kanagawa, Japan – August 19, 2025: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Tuesday received a warm welcome from the management of Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Kanagawa, Japan, as part of his official visit to strengthen health sector collaboration between Liberia and Japan.

During the visit, Executive Director Dr. Shuzo Kobayashi reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to advancing global medical partnerships and highlighted areas of cooperation with Liberia. Discussions focused on enhancing Liberia’s healthcare system through knowledge exchange, staff training, and the introduction of modern treatment technologies.

President Boakai expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Kobayashi and his team for their past support, particularly the hospital’s assistance to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia. Shonan Kamakura General Hospital has previously provided dialysis machines and supported the establishment of Liberia’s dialysis center—an intervention the President noted has saved lives and expanded access to critical care.

The Liberian leader stressed the importance of building on these achievements to ensure continuity and sustainability in healthcare delivery. He assured the hospital’s management of his administration’s determination to create an enabling environment for such partnerships to thrive.

For his part, Dr. Kobayashi pledged continued support in areas including telemedicine, specialized treatment, staff capacity building, and long-term medical sustainability.

President Boakai described the engagement as a “renewed chapter in Liberia–Japan health cooperation,” emphasizing that collaborations with leading medical institutions like Shonan Kamakura General Hospital are vital to his government’s vision of creating a healthier and more resilient nation.
