SEAL Calls for the Burial of Hon. Sylvester M. Grigsby on Liberian Soil, Commends President Boakai’s Strategic Leadership at TICAD-9

The South-Eastern Alliance of Liberia (SEAL) extends its deepest condolences to the family of our eminent statesman, the late Hon. Sylvester M. Grigsby, former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, who passed away in the United States while undergoing treatment.

While we respect the grief of the bereaved family, SEAL respectfully differs with the decision of Madam Grigsby, widow of our fallen statesman, to have her husband laid to rest abroad.

Hon. Grigsby was more than a public servant—he was a proud son of Sarpo land, with ancestral roots in Voogbadee and Grigsby Farm, Sinoe County. A true traditional Sarpo man, his heritage and cultural obligations demand that he be laid to rest among his people.

Throughout his distinguished career, Hon. Grigsby devoted his entire professional life to the service of Liberia. Among his many contributions:

Minister of State for Presidential Affairs under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. (2024–2025). Secretary to the Cabinet under President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Superintendent of Sinoe County, Deputy Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations, Numerous other diplomatic, advisory, and governance roles

These positions, coupled with his extensive contributions to policy, governance, and international relations, affirm that Hon. Grigsby’s life was inseparably tied to Liberia. Beyond public service, he was a humanitarian, mentor, and advocate whose generosity and commitment to young people left an enduring impact across the nation.

For these reasons, SEAL strongly believes the Liberian people deserve the opportunity to pay their final respects to him on Liberian soil. We therefore appeal to Madam Grigsby and the family to reconsider their decision and allow this distinguished son of Sinoe and Liberia to be laid to rest in his homeland.

At the same time, SEAL applauds President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. for his strategic leadership in assembling a high-level delegation of sectoral leaders to accompany him to the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) in Yokohama, Japan, and to Expo 2025 in Osaka.

TICAD, co-organized by the Government of Japan, the United Nations, the World Bank, and the African Union Commission, remains a premier global platform for strengthening Africa–Japan partnerships in trade, investment, agriculture, health, education, governance, and industrial development.

By including ministers of Finance, Commerce, Mines and Energy, Agriculture, Health, Education, and other key portfolios, President Boakai has ensured Liberia’s strategic priorities are directly aligned with the global development agenda.

Potential Benefits to Liberia:

Trade and Investment: Expanded opportunities for Liberian businesses to attract Japanese and Asian investment in agriculture, energy, and infrastructure. Agricultural Development: Partnerships to modernize farming practices and enhance food security.

Energy Expansion: Prospects for renewable and sustainable energy projects to reduce power shortages.

Health and Education: Access to advanced Japanese technology and funding to strengthen healthcare and education systems. Infrastructure: Support for roads, ports, and digital connectivity to boost national competitiveness. Tourism Promotion: Expo 2025 offers Liberia the chance to showcase its culture, natural beauty, and investment potential to millions of global visitors.

SEAL views this as a bold and forward-looking step, one that deepens Liberia’s integration into global development frameworks while laying the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.

In conclusion, SEAL remains committed to safeguarding the cultural values of our people while supporting progressive national initiatives. We therefore call for the dignified repatriation and burial of Hon. Sylvester M. Grigsby in his homeland, and we reaffirm our strong support for President Boakai’s leadership in positioning Liberia for greater international cooperation and economic transformation.
