Monrovia City Corporation Engages Stakeholders on 5-Year Strategic Plan

Monrovia, August 20, 2025 – The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has taken another major step toward shaping the future of Liberia’s capital city by hosting a stakeholder validation workshop on its 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, themed “The Monrovia We Want.”

The session brought together local government representatives, commissioners, community leaders, elders, and the governor of the Borough of New Kru Town, among others. Participants commended Mayor John-Charuk Siafa and the city council for ensuring the process remains participatory and people-centered.

The workshop aimed to create awareness about the city’s first comprehensive strategic plan, build public support, and incorporate inputs from stakeholders to align the framework with residents’ expectations and aspirations.

Mayor Siafa underscored the importance of the initiative, saying, “To move this city forward, it is imperative that we have a plan that guides our actions strategically. The future of our capital will not be inherited by default; it must be constructed by design.”

The five-year strategy focuses on five key pillars: governance, economy, environment, sustainable communities, and digitization. These areas reflect pressing concerns of residents, from job creation and waste management to climate resilience and access to digital resources.

Aligned with President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), the Greater Monrovia Urban Development Strategy (GMUDS), Sustainable Development Goal 11, the MCC 2024 Needs Assessment, and Liberia’s Local Government Act of 2018, the plan is expected to drive inclusive growth, environmental justice, and digital transformation.

Monrovia, which hosts over a third of Liberia’s population, faces challenges including rapid urbanization, inadequate infrastructure, and climate vulnerability. Stakeholders at the workshop engaged in robust discussions, providing insights and recommendations to strengthen the plan.

Mayor Siafa expressed gratitude for the contributions, stressing that the feedback would be essential in shaping the city’s progress. A draft of the plan will be submitted to the city council for review and approval in the coming weeks.
