Liberia Courts French Investors as Paris Business Mission Signals New Economic Push

Monrovia, Liberia — Liberia is preparing to open a new chapter in its economic diplomacy as France’s leading business confederation, Mouvement des Entreprises de France (MEDEF), plans a high-level investment mission to Liberia in June, in what officials see as a key test of the country’s effort to turn foreign relations into real economic opportunity.

The June 22 visit by MEDEF, France’s most influential private sector network, is expected to bring senior business leaders to Liberia for direct talks with government officials and private sector actors, with discussions likely to focus on trade, infrastructure, enterprise development, and long-term investment prospects.

For the Liberian government, the visit represents more than a diplomatic engagement. It is part of a broader strategy to reposition Liberia as a more competitive destination for international capital while linking foreign investment to domestic priorities such as job creation, skills training, and youth empowerment.

Officials say the initiative is being coordinated through Liberia’s diplomatic mission in Paris, with Ambassador Teeko Tozay Yorlay and Youth and Sports Minister Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah playing central roles in advancing the outreach. Their engagement reflects a growing effort by the government to connect foreign policy with economic development goals, particularly for Liberia’s young population.

That strategy has become increasingly central to the government’s messaging, especially as Liberia seeks to respond to the economic pressures facing a country where nearly three-quarters of the population is under the age of 35. Authorities have repeatedly argued that investment must deliver visible benefits for young people through employment, entrepreneurship, and workforce development.

The planned mission follows renewed momentum in Liberia-France relations after President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s October 2025 visit to France, where both countries signed a broad cooperation agreement aimed at expanding ties in economic development and strategic partnership.

Liberian officials now view that agreement as the diplomatic foundation for deeper commercial engagement, with the upcoming MEDEF visit serving as one of the first major tests of whether those commitments can translate into measurable investment outcomes.

The groundwork for the mission was reinforced during a high-level meeting on April 30 at Liberia’s Embassy in Paris, where Minister Kruah and Ambassador Yorlay met with a MEDEF International delegation led by Chief Executive Officer Philippe Gautier. Talks focused on Liberia’s investment landscape and sectors with potential for long-term French engagement.

During the meeting, Gautier confirmed that a business delegation would travel to Liberia to assess opportunities firsthand, engage policymakers, and explore possible partnerships with local stakeholders.

The upcoming mission is being viewed by Liberian officials as an early signal of growing international interest in the country’s economic direction and a chance to demonstrate that Liberia can compete more effectively for strategic foreign investment.

The effort also reflects the Foreign Ministry’s broader push to make Liberia’s diplomatic missions more commercially driven. Under the direction of Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberian embassies have increasingly been tasked with attracting investors, expanding trade links, and positioning Liberia more aggressively in global markets.

For the Boakai administration, the challenge now is not simply attracting foreign interest but converting diplomatic goodwill into investment that produces jobs, expands opportunity, and delivers tangible economic gains at home.
