Former Pres. Weah Uses Media Launch to Reinforce Anti-Corruption and Self-Reliance Message

Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah used the dedication ceremony of King’s FM to deliver a pointed message on ethical leadership, personal responsibility, and the dangers of misusing public resources.

Speaking at the event, Weah distanced himself from any notion of political favoritism or financial impropriety, stressing that public office should never be used to benefit private ventures. Addressing the station’s manager, Abraham Wheon, he underscored that the success of the media outlet must come through effective management rather than government support.

Weah made it clear that even during his presidency, he refused to allocate state funds to projects that did not serve the broader public interest. He framed this stance as part of a wider commitment to accountability and transparency in leadership.

Drawing from his personal journey, the former president highlighted the role of hard work in shaping his values. He recounted the physical and personal sacrifices he endured throughout his life, presenting them as evidence of his belief in earning success rather than acquiring it through privilege or misuse of power.

He also reflected on the pressures that come with generosity in public life, noting that acts of kindness can sometimes create unrealistic expectations. Referencing former official Nathaniel McGill, Weah suggested that their willingness to share resources in difficult times led some to assume they had unlimited wealth.

In a more personal moment, Weah credited his upbringing for grounding his principles. While acknowledging his father’s industrious background as a mechanic and entrepreneur, he emphasized that his moral outlook was largely influenced by his grandmother.

The remarks, delivered at what was otherwise a celebratory media event, highlighted Weah’s continued focus on integrity and self-reliance as core pillars of leadership in Liberia.
