St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Experimental School has been crowned champion of the second edition of the Grand Bassa Students Union (GBASU) Quiz and Spelling Bee Competition, following a dramatic comeback victory in Compound #3, Wee Statutory District, on March 5, 2026.
In a nail-biting grand final, St. Joseph edged Gorblee Central High School 195–190, overturning Gorblee’s late lead by correctly answering the final question of the competition. Gorblee had momentarily gone ahead with 190 points to St. Joseph’s 185, but the decisive last round swung the contest, sealing a narrow and hard-fought win for St. Joseph and securing their championship status.
The President of the Grand Bassa Students Union, Cde. Sennieh D. Smith, described the tournament as a vital platform for students to showcase their academic abilities while promoting intellectual growth and general knowledge among young people in the county. She noted that the competition not only celebrated excellence but also encouraged healthy academic rivalry and confidence in public speaking and critical thinking.
The event was made possible with funding from the Grand Bassa County Administration, headed by Superintendent Karyou, using proceeds generated from the sale of county straps. This support, organizers said, reflects a growing commitment by local authorities to invest in education and youth development initiatives.
Cde. Smith also reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to decentralizing similar academic programs to other districts across Grand Bassa County, ensuring that more schools and students benefit from such opportunities. With St. Joseph the Worker now holding the title, expectations are already rising for an even more competitive edition in the years ahead.
