Kapsabet, Kenya – November 7, 2025 – In a bid to strengthen Nandi County’s status as the cradle of champions, leaders from Emgwen and surrounding regions have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting local athletic talent. The assurance followed a high-level engagement with the Kapsabet Athletics Team, a vibrant community of elite runners and coaches drawn from Emgwen, Nandi, and neighboring areas.
The meeting, led by local officials and sports stakeholders, focused on strategies to sustain Nandi’s global athletic dominance while addressing the challenges faced by athletes in training and competition. The session underscored the region’s vision of building a more structured, inclusive, and well-supported sports ecosystem capable of nurturing world-class talent.
Strengthening the Foundations of Athletic Development
During the discussions, participants outlined several targeted interventions aimed at enhancing the welfare and performance of athletes. These included pledges to support the creation of the Nandi Athletics Welfare Group, which will function as an official forum for athlete engagement and welfare advocacy, help with passport processing for athletes going overseas, and facilitate food supplies for training camps.
Leaders also underlined the significance of infrastructure, promising to maintain and upgrade important training routes and feeder roads and to speed up the clearance of the Kapsabet Showground training track, which has been impacted by delays after tree harvesting operations. It is anticipated that these enhancements will offer safer, more effective training routes while guaranteeing that athletes can sustain high performance standards throughout the year.
Institutional and Structural Support for Talent Growth
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the proposal to establish the Emgwen Sports Academy, envisioned as a long-term investment in the county’s athletic future. The academy would focus on talent identification, mentorship, and holistic athlete development—combining education, sports science, and professional coaching under one framework.

Additionally, leaders expressed plans to launch an annual Emgwen Road Race, aimed at encouraging grassroots participation and creating a sustainable competitive culture among upcoming athletes. Such events, they said, would not only inspire young talent but also attract national and international attention, boosting local tourism and economic activity.
In order to lessen the logistical obstacles that frequently prevent participation, particularly for runners from rural areas, the meeting also looked at ways to integrate athletes into government youth employment programs and guarantee transportation for competitions and events.
Building Partnerships for a Lasting Legacy
In his remarks, the local representative praised the unwavering spirit of the athletes and reaffirmed the county’s dedication to collaborative development.
“Our athletes continue to raise our county’s profile globally, and it is important that we walk with them in strengthening their journey,” he said. “We are committed to working with county and national partners, corporate stakeholders, and the athletics fraternity to ensure our athletes have the proper environment to train, compete, and excel.”
He stressed that athletics is not only a source of pride but also a vehicle for community empowerment and economic transformation. By supporting athletes holistically—from welfare and infrastructure to policy and sponsorship—the county hopes to sustain its reputation as a global powerhouse in distance running.
Nandi: The Enduring Home of Champions
For decades, Nandi County has been celebrated as the “Source of Champions,” home to some of Kenya’s and the world’s most accomplished runners. With continued investment in talent development, institutional support, and infrastructure, the region is positioning itself to remain at the forefront of global athletics.
The initiatives presented at the Kapsabet meeting signify a new phase in the county’s sports development journey, one based on collaboration, creativity, and pride in a legacy that inspires people all over the world.
“Our home is the source of champions,” the representative concluded. “And we will continue to invest in that legacy.”
