New LDEA Chief Launches Nationwide Drug Test for Officers, Declares “Final Warning” to Traffickers

Monrovia, September 1, 2025 — The newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Fitzgerald T.M. Biago, has announced sweeping reforms and a renewed crackdown on illicit drugs, beginning with a compulsory nationwide drug test for all LDEA officers.

Speaking in a special statement in Monrovia on Monday, Biago expressed gratitude to President Joseph N. Boakai for entrusting him and his interim leadership team with what he described as a “daunting but necessary” responsibility. He also acknowledged the support of the Minister of Justice as the agency embarks on a decisive new chapter.

“The proliferation and abuse of illicit drugs stand today as one of the gravest national threats confronting Liberia. It endangers our youth, undermines our communities, and poses a direct risk to national security,” Biago said. “Confronting this crisis requires the full support of every Liberian.”

In his first policy move, Biago announced a mandatory drug test for all LDEA officers, stressing that those leading the fight against narcotics must themselves be “beyond reproach.” He said the measure is intended to set a new tone of accountability, integrity, and discipline across the agency.

The OIC further disclosed that the LDEA will intensify its operations in the coming days, targeting drug trafficking networks and distribution chains with “renewed vigor—without fear or favor.” To bolster public participation, the agency plans to establish an Anti-Drugs Hotline that will allow citizens to provide intelligence and report suspicious activities.

Biago called on the Liberian media to serve as partners in the campaign by raising public awareness, noting that effective sensitization and education are vital to national success against narcotics.

Addressing drug traffickers and distributors directly, he issued a stark warning: “Consider this your final warning. The LDEA will come after you with the full weight of the law. There will be no hiding place. We will pursue you relentlessly, prosecute you vigorously, and ensure that justice is served. The time of impunity is over.”

Biago emphasized that the agency will closely coordinate with the Liberia National Police and other Joint Security bodies to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in its operations.

“Time is running out for those involved in illicit drug trafficking, distribution, and abuse,” he declared. “The LDEA will employ every lawful means to restore sanity and safeguard the future of our beloved nation.”

He closed his remarks with a message of resolve and optimism: “With God above and the support of every Liberian, we shall prevail.”
