ArcelorMittal Liberia: Seventeen Years of Partnership, Progress, and Promise for the Future

Nimba County, August 19, 2025 — ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has reaffirmed its role as a cornerstone of Liberia’s economic growth, marking over 17 years of sustained investment, employment, and community development. With a record of being one of the country’s largest private investors, taxpayers, and employers, the company continues to demonstrate what officials describe as an “unwavering commitment” to Liberia’s long-term prosperity.

Since arriving in Liberia in 2006, ArcelorMittal has steadily grown into the country’s largest private-sector employer, providing thousands of Liberians with stable and dignified work. The company’s workforce includes skilled engineers, technicians, and tradespeople, many of whom have benefited from hands-on vocational training programs. This capacity-building effort, stakeholders say, is helping to nurture a generation of professionals who are not only contributing to mining operations but also applying their skills across Liberia’s broader economy.

“ArcelorMittal Liberia has been more than just an investor. It has been a partner in national progress,” said a senior local official in Nimba County. “The company’s contributions to jobs, training, and community infrastructure have left a lasting mark on families and communities.”

Beyond employment, AML’s investments have extended into critical areas of social development. The company has supported the construction and rehabilitation of schools, health centers, and roads, while funding scholarship programs that enable Liberian youth to pursue higher education. Communities in Nimba, Grand Bassa, and Bong counties — the heartlands of ArcelorMittal’s operations — have seen significant infrastructure and social service improvements as a result of the company’s corporate social responsibility programs.

Currently, ArcelorMittal Liberia is in the midst of a landmark $1.2 billion expansion project that will transform its operations into the largest brownfield mining venture in West Africa. The expansion is expected to more than double iron ore production, creating additional jobs and significantly increasing government revenue through taxes and royalties. Industry analysts say the project will place Liberia at the center of West Africa’s iron ore market while attracting new waves of global investment.

The Government of Liberia has welcomed the expansion as a strategic boost to the nation’s economy. Officials have praised the initiative as a sign of confidence in Liberia’s stability and its potential as a destination for responsible investment. “This expansion is not just about mining,” a government spokesperson noted. “It’s about building a more resilient economy, empowering citizens with jobs and skills, and positioning Liberia as a competitive player on the global stage.”

For ArcelorMittal, the expansion underscores its long-term vision for Liberia. The company has repeatedly emphasized that it views its presence not as a short-term commercial engagement but as a generational partnership with the people of Liberia.

“As we look toward the future, our mission remains clear — to build more than mines,” the company said in a recent statement. “We are here to build opportunity, prosperity, and national pride.”

With 17 years of contribution already behind it and a multibillion-dollar expansion ahead, ArcelorMittal Liberia is not only extracting resources but also helping to shape the very foundation of Liberia’s future.
