University of Liberia Suspends Employee Accused of Armed Robbery, Condemns Incident

Monrovia, August 13, 2025 – The Administration of the University of Liberia (UL) has strongly condemned an alleged armed robbery incident reportedly carried out by one of its employees, describing the act as a grave violation of the institution’s values and policies.

The employee, Mr. Fobay E. Johnson, who serves as an administrative assistant in the College of Health Sciences, has been suspended without pay and benefits pending the outcome of criminal proceedings. UL authorities stated that further disciplinary measures will be determined in line with the University’s Human Resource Manual once the case is concluded.

According to police reports and video evidence, Mr. Johnson is accused of storming a private banking office at Ecobank, where he allegedly brandished a shotgun and attempted to duct tape a woman’s mouth. He has since been charged with armed robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession and sale of lethal objects.

UL officials expressed deep concern over the allegations, noting that the reported conduct directly violates the University’s zero-tolerance policy on violence and undermines the integrity of the institution.

“The University frowns on such actions and considers them a gross violation of the values and standards expected of its employees,” a statement from the administration read. “Faculty, staff, and students are cautioned to avoid unlawful acts that could endanger others or tarnish the University’s image.”

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the mission and vision of the University of Liberia while pledging full cooperation with law enforcement authorities handling the matter.

The statement was signed by Cllr. Norris L. Tweah, Vice President for University Relations.
