Grand Bassa County, August 2, 2025 — After years of neglect and accidents, the St. John River Bridge, an essential link for the people of Bong and Grand Bassa Counties, is almost fully repaired.
Once called a “death trap” because of its poor condition and tragic accidents, the bridge is now being carefully restored. The project gained momentum after Representative Prince K. Koinah pushed for an investigation into the bridge’s unsafe state, which had left communities isolated and travelers at risk.
With support from ArcelorMittal Liberia, the repair work is nearing completion. During a recent visit to the site at Rock Crusher, Rep. Koinah was praised by residents from both counties for leading the effort. “This bridge is more than just a crossing,” Koinah told the community. “It supports daily life, trade, and ArcelorMittal Liberia’s operations, making it a key part of local growth.”
Julius Saywallah, Chief Engineer at ArcelorMittal, assured that the new bridge will be built to last. “Once finished, this bridge will serve the community safely for at least 50 years,” he said.
The project also received support from Representative Alfred Flomo of Bassa District #3, who helped secure backing for the repairs. People from both counties are grateful and see the bridge’s near completion as a sign of hope and progress.
For decades, the St. John River Bridge has been crucial for trade, travel, and farming between the two counties. Its poor condition disrupted trade, made healthcare access difficult, and put thousands of commuters in danger. The restoration will restore safety and help boost the local economy, especially for farmers and businesses relying on this route.
As the final work wraps up, people in Bong and Grand Bassa Counties eagerly await the day the bridge reopens, marking a new chapter of stronger, safer connections.
