A lowbed trailer carrying a heavy excavator plunged into the Gen River in Geneken Town along the Barclayville–Pleebo highway, turning an ordinary transport trip into a dramatic roadside emergency that drew residents rushing to the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck was heading from Barclayville toward Pleebo when it lost control, veered off the road, and entered the river. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, but the incident has already renewed worries about the safety of one of Grand Kru County’s most important transport routes.
Residents who saw the crash described a frightening moment as the vehicle left the roadway and went straight into the water.
“We saw the truck leave the road and go straight into the river. Everyone nearby rushed there to help, but the vehicle was already in the water,” one eyewitness said.
The trailer was carrying a heavy-duty excavator at the time of the crash. Despite the scale of the incident, preliminary reports indicate that no major injuries were recorded. The driver and other occupants reportedly escaped without serious harm.
Photos and videos from the scene showed the truck partly submerged in the river, with the excavator still attached to the trailer. Community members gathered in large numbers, both to witness the incident and to assist where possible.
A transport route under pressure
The accident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by travelers and transport operators along the Barclayville–Pleebo highway. The road serves as a major link between Grand Kru and Maryland Counties and is regularly used by heavy-duty trucks moving construction equipment, mining machinery, and commercial goods.
For residents, the crash is not just about one truck. It is a reminder that heavy traffic, difficult road conditions, and weak safety enforcement can quickly turn a routine journey into a dangerous event. The concern now is whether enough is being done to protect people who depend on this highway every day.
What residents want
Community members are calling on authorities to investigate the accident thoroughly and determine what caused the vehicle to lose control. They are also urging officials to consider stronger safety measures to reduce the chances of similar crashes in the future.
Possible concerns raised by residents include road condition, driver fatigue, vehicle maintenance, and the safe movement of oversized equipment. Those issues matter because accidents involving heavy machines can endanger lives, block roads, and damage infrastructure even when injuries are minimal.
Next steps
As of press time, local authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident. Recovery operations for the truck and excavator are expected to begin after technical assessment by the relevant authorities and equipment operators.
The crash remains under investigation, and the full circumstances are still unclear. But for travelers on the Barclayville–Pleebo highway, the message is already plain: road safety on this corridor needs urgent attention before a near-disaster becomes a tragedy.
