Liberia Condemns U.S. Action Against Venezuela, Express Solidarity With Maduro

Monrovia, Liberia, January 6, 2026. Liberia has urged calm, negotiation, and strict regard to international law as the United Nations Security Council considers Venezuela’s escalating political crisis.
Ambassador Lewis Garseedah Brown II, Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations, expressed concern on behalf of the A3 (African members of the Security Council) regarding recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as disruptions to state institutions.
‎Addressing the Council, Ambassador Brown thanked the Presidency for convening the meeting and congratulated Somalia on assuming the rotating presidency of the Security Council. He also acknowledged the briefing by UN Under-Secretary-General Carlos and contributions from civil society representatives, while welcoming Venezuela and regional stakeholders to the discussions.

‎‎The A3 aligned itself with the African Union’s recent communiqué on Venezuela, warning that the unfolding situation poses serious risks not only to Venezuela’s internal stability but also to wider regional peace and security.

‎Reaffirming long-standing principles, Liberia underscored the A3’s commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as enshrined in the UN Charter. Ambassador Brown stressed that these principles remain central to international cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations.

He emphasised that a long-term solution to the Venezuelan issue can only be achieved through an inclusive, Venezuelan-led process based on true discussion and respect for the Venezuelan people’s will and rights, with constructive assistance from the international community.
The A3 expressed sympathy with Venezuelans and asked domestic and international players to maintain caution, preserve international law, and avoid measures that might escalate tensions or destabilise the region.
Ambassador Brown expressed the A3’s commitment to supporting the Security Council and regional efforts to resolve the Venezuela issue peacefully, inclusively, and sustainably.
