Monrovia – Dnnews Liberia has learned that Liberia’s Cultural Ambassador, Kerkula Kamara, has come under fire for allegedly presiding over an unauthorized induction of officials into the Musicians’ Union of Liberia—bypassing the Union’s recognized leadership and established procedures.
Despite lacking constitutional authority under the Musicians’ Union Constitution of July 18, 2025, Kamara reportedly swore in individuals to key positions including President, Vice President for Operations, Vice President, and Financial Secretary. Several other elected positions, including Secretary-General and Welfare Officer, declined to participate.
A document obtained by Dnnews, signed by Rufus T. Saylee, Assistant Minister for Trade Union Affairs & Social Dialogue at the Ministry of Labor, affirms that a Ministry ruling issued on June 18, 2025, in response to a complaint by former Union official S. Michael Davies, is final, binding, and enforceable. The ruling mandates that all parties adhere strictly to its terms.
The dispute stems from a longstanding leadership conflict, allegedly worsened by Kamara’s decision to bypass the Union’s mandated Congress—an event meant to pave the way for legitimate elections. Interim President of the Musicians’ Union, Mr. Elliot Saytonneh, denounced the process as unlawful.
“I am not aware of the induction. I never participated in any election they claim to have had,” Saytonneh told Dnnews. “How can I be the chairman mandated to lead the Union to Congress, and then oversee proper elections—yet Kerkula Kamara and others went ahead with an induction behind my back?”
Saytonneh confirmed the matter has been taken to court, accusing Kamara and associates of ignoring official citations to appear. “This level of disregard for the law and the will of Liberian musicians is deeply troubling,” he said.
Artists and observers have expressed growing concern over the legality and transparency of leadership transitions within the Union. When contacted, Kamara said he is currently out of town and expects to return to Monrovia next week.
