Monrovia, Liberia – The Chinese Embassy in Liberia has bid farewell to 92 Liberian students who are set to pursue academic studies in China, marking another milestone in the growing educational partnership between the two countries.
Speaking at a China Scholarship Reception in Monrovia on Monday, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu described the students as a “new chapter” in Liberia–China academic cooperation and a reflection of the shared vision to build “a community with a shared future for humanity.”
“We are proud of you,” Ambassador Yin told the departing students. “The China scholarship, in whatever form, is intended to enhance exchanges and cooperation, promote mutual understanding and friendship between China and Liberia. It fully demonstrates China’s commitment to the China–Liberia strategic partnership.”
The Ambassador acknowledged the role of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Monrovia City Council, and partner universities in making the scholarship program possible. He encouraged the students to approach their studies with diligence, resilience, and an enduring sense of curiosity.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
As part of the embassy’s broader educational support, the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship has been awarded to 172 students from five Liberian institutions — the University of Liberia, the Confucius Institute at UL, Tubman University, Cuttington University, and Bomi Community College — in recognition of academic achievement and potential.
Ambassador Yin highlighted China’s long-standing academic contributions to Liberia, including: Scholarships for about 2,000 Liberians since 1981, Short-term training for nearly 3,000 participants since 2010, Major infrastructure projects such as the University of Liberia’s Fendell Campus and the refurbishment of the Monrovia Vocational Training Center
A Call to Service
The envoy urged the students to return home and use their skills to serve Liberia. “You are the future of the nation and the hope of the people. After completing your studies, try to serve the people, serve the country, and contribute your wisdom and talents to the nation. Please be a new generation of responsibility,” he said.
Ambassador Yin also described the scholars as “the strongest bridge and the most powerful bond” between the two countries, encouraging them to broaden their perspectives, enhance their knowledge, and build lasting friendships through sincere exchanges.
The 92 students are scheduled to leave Liberia in the coming days to begin their studies at various Chinese universities under full and partial scholarship programs.
