Historic Harper City Hall Crumbles as Mayor Urges Swift Renovation

The historic Harper City Hall Theatre, once the pride of Maryland County, now stands in near ruin, prompting Harper City Mayor Abraham Jackson to call for urgent action to restore the landmark.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Mayor Jackson underscored the theatre’s importance to Harper and the wider Maryland County community, describing it as more than just a building, but a cultural hub that once brought residents together.

“City Hall Theatre played a central role in Harper before the war,” Mayor Jackson recalled. “From school graduations to stage plays and community meetings, it was a place where our people gathered. Today, it is a shadow of its former self. We must act now to preserve this symbol of our heritage.”

Built in the early 1970s under the administration of President William V.S. Tubman, the theatre quickly became a focal point for cultural and social events. It was particularly vibrant in the 1980s until the onset of Liberia’s civil conflict in 1990, which left the structure heavily damaged and neglected for decades.

According to Mayor Jackson, the building no longer meets safety or comfort standards, raising concerns about its usability. While admitting he is not an engineer, he revealed plans to initiate a comprehensive, multi-phase renovation program. The process will begin with a full technical assessment to determine the extent of structural repairs and upgrades required.

“This evaluation will guide us in appealing to the national government, our county leadership, and Maryland County citizens abroad for both technical expertise and financial contributions,” he said. “The goal is not just to repair the theatre but to restore it as a space that can once again serve our people.”

The proposed renovation will be presented at the next Maryland County Council meeting, where local leaders, officials, and residents are expected to review and discuss the plan. A community forum will also be held to solicit broader public input, ensuring citizens have a voice in shaping the theatre’s revival.

For many in Harper, the theatre holds deep personal and collective memories. Longtime resident Madam Sarah Harmon shared her excitement about the restoration efforts. “The Harper City Hall Theatre was our cultural heart,” she said. “I remember attending graduations, movie screenings, and plays there. It gave Harper its unique identity. I’m hopeful that with the Mayor’s leadership, we will see it shine again.”

Mayor Jackson stressed that while funding will be a major challenge, his administration is committed to mobilizing support from diverse sources, including private partners. He described the renovation as essential not only for cultural revival but also for strengthening community cohesion.

“Together, we can bring back the Harper City Hall Theatre and ensure it remains a vibrant landmark for generations to come,” he affirmed.

If realized, the restoration is expected to reestablish the theatre as a cornerstone of community life in Harper, reviving local arts and cultural expression while preserving a historic piece of Maryland County’s identity.
