A new grassroots economic push is taking shape in Margibi County, where the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has launched a women-focused initiative aimed at transforming livelihoods through community-driven savings and financial empowerment.
Unveiled in District #5, the Dekegar Village Savings Program is designed to expand economic opportunities for women by promoting savings culture, access to small-scale financing, and income-generating activities. The launch event drew a wide cross-section of the community, including local leaders, youth groups, traditional authorities, and residents.
CMC Women Congress Chair Alice Baysah described the initiative as a direct response to community demand, particularly following a successful soap-making training program previously conducted in the district. She emphasized that the new program moves beyond skills training by creating a financial structure to support long-term economic growth for women.
According to Baysah, at least 200 women are expected to benefit from the initiative, gaining tools to strengthen their businesses, support their households, and contribute to local development.
Representing CMC Political Leader Musa Bility, Madam Dennise Bility used the occasion to deliver a broader message of unity. She urged residents to rise above religious differences and work collectively toward national progress, noting that her own interfaith marriage has thrived on mutual respect and understanding.
To kick-start the program, she made an initial contribution of L$285,000, reinforcing the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment and community-based development.
Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, describing it as both timely and impactful. Many expressed optimism that the Village Savings Program will provide much-needed financial support and open new pathways for improving their businesses and household incomes.
The launch reflects CMC’s continued focus on grassroots engagement, signaling an effort to build economic resilience at the community level while positioning women as key drivers of local development.
