Vice President Koung Urges Unity, Accountability as Liberia’s Senate Opens New Legislative Session

MONROVIA — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung Sr. on Monday called for unity, courage, and responsible governance as he officially marked the commencement of the 55th National Legislature and the opening of the 3rd Regular Session of the Liberian Senate.

Speaking at the Capitol Building on January 12, 2026, the Vice President described the Senate as a cornerstone of Liberia’s democratic governance, emphasizing its constitutional role in lawmaking, oversight, and safeguarding accountability on behalf of the Liberian people.

“This Senate stands as a pillar of national governance, a guardian of accountability, and a voice of our people,” Koung said, noting that the new session comes at a critical moment in Liberia’s democratic journey—one that demands unity over division and patriotism over partisanship.

He praised the Senate for its historic role in passing Liberia’s first national budget exceeding US$1 billion, describing the milestone as more than a fiscal achievement. According to him, the landmark budget signals Liberia’s readiness to “think bigger, act decisively, and achieve greater results,” while reinforcing the Senate’s responsibility to prioritize national interest above political affiliation.

Vice President Koung urged lawmakers from across the political spectrum to collaborate in crafting policies and laws that strengthen governance, deepen democracy, and uphold the rule of law. He stressed that political diversity within the Senate should be viewed as a national asset rather than a source of division.

In remarks directed at the opposition, Koung acknowledged its constitutional role in holding the government accountable, stating that democracy thrives on scrutiny and dissent. However, he cautioned that accountability must be constructive and grounded in dialogue, evidence, and policy debate, rather than personal attacks or destructive rhetoric.

“Our people deserve better. Our democracy demands better,” he said.

Addressing members of the ruling party, the Vice President called for discipline, humility, and a strong focus on results, noting that leadership should be measured by tangible outcomes rather than political promises. He emphasized that governance must remain people-centered and responsive to the daily realities faced by citizens.

Koung also reaffirmed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s commitment to the full implementation of the ARREST Agenda, which he said is aimed at transforming lives, restoring confidence in public institutions, and building a resilient and inclusive economy.

While acknowledging that job creation remains a major national challenge, the Vice President said the government is taking deliberate steps through the execution of the national budget to improve the investment climate, expand access to electricity, revitalize agriculture, and strengthen key sectors of the economy.

He concluded by urging senators to rise to the demands of history, reminding them that the decisions taken during the new legislative session will shape Liberia’s democratic and developmental path for years to come.
