Authorities in Nimba County have arrested twenty-three individuals in connection with the alleged illegal possession and discharge of firearms in communities within Tappita District, raising concerns about security in the area.
The arrests were carried out by the Liberia National Police (LNP) through a joint security operation following complaints from residents of New Toe’s Town and Unification Town. Community members had reportedly alerted authorities that a group of men were seen in nearby bushes discharging single-barrel guns, killing cattle, and allegedly taking property belonging to residents.
In response to the reports, local security agencies convened an emergency meeting and agreed to conduct a fact-finding operation to verify the allegations and restore calm in the affected communities.
During the operation, security personnel moved into the area and apprehended twenty-three suspects believed to be linked to the reported activities.
Authorities also recovered several items during the exercise, including ten single-barrel guns, eight cutlasses, and five empty gun shells, which investigators believe may have been used in the alleged incidents.
All suspects are currently in police custody while investigations continue to determine their level of involvement and the circumstances surrounding the alleged activities.
The Liberia National Police has assured residents of Tappita District and surrounding communities that it remains committed to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property.
Police authorities are also encouraging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement by promptly reporting suspicious activities within their communities to help strengthen public safety and prevent further incidents.
