UNDP, Gov’t Spotlight SMEs as Engines of Liberia’s Economic Transformation

As Growth Accelerator Program Strengthens Women- and Youth-Led Enterprises

MONROVIA, August 29, 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reaffirmed the central role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in shaping Liberia’s economic future under the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The message came during the Final Pitch and Selection Ceremony of the Growth Accelerator Liberia Programme – Cohort V, held this week in Monrovia.

UNDP Resident Representative Aliou Dia urged participating entrepreneurs to see the initiative as more than just a competition, stressing that every idea contributes to the nation’s transformation.

“The program is not all about winning; by participating, you are investing in Liberia’s future journey,” Dia told participants. “As SMEs, you are already part of the future we want, whether you win in this pitching session or not.”

He emphasized that the private sector remains the backbone of the Liberian economy, driving job creation, innovation, and inclusive growth. Calling entrepreneurs “the forerunners of the ARREST Agenda,” Dia encouraged them to think boldly as they pitched for support.

Launched in 2021, the Growth Accelerator Programme is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) and development partners. It provides targeted technical support, mentorship, and co-financing grants to high-potential businesses. To date, it has supported more than 104 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives with over US$2.3 million in investment.

Representing Commerce Minister Magdalene Dagoseh—who is attending the TICAD 9 Summit in Japan—Deputy Minister for Administration Tarnue N. Jeke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. He said the program is helping build “a pipeline of investable Liberian businesses” positioned to attract financing, expand operations, and contribute to national prosperity.

Jeke further noted that the initiative prioritizes women- and youth-led enterprises, green value chains, and regional balance, making growth both inclusive and equitable.

This year’s cohort attracted 209 applications from 13 counties. After a rigorous selection process managed by iCampus Liberia with support from the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), 18 businesses advanced to the final stage to compete for US$10,000 co-financing grants, mentorship, and technical assistance.

Among the finalists are Angea Agro Hub Inc., Choices Liberia Limited, James’ Healthline Liberia Limited, JBC Enterprise, Afro Resources Inc., Leelah Group of Companies, Liberia Agri-Processing Venture (LAP Venture), Harvesting Hope Enterprise, and Youth Agribusiness for Liberian Indigenous Vegetable and Green Investment. Their projects span agriculture, health, technology, and trade.

As the event drew to a close, Dia reminded participants that their resilience and creativity are vital to national progress.

“Liberia’s economic transformation depends on your courage, creativity, and commitment. With the right support, mentorship, and investment, you can lead the nation into a new era of inclusive prosperity,” he said.

The Growth Accelerator Liberia Programme has since become a cornerstone of private sector development, ensuring that women, youth, and innovative entrepreneurs remain at the forefront of Liberia’s economic journey.
