The Human Rights Monitor of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church strongly condemns the violent assault that occurred on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the New Georgia United Methodist Church, located in the New Georgia Estate, Montserrado County.
During a peaceful worship service, Brother Alphonso Sieh and Mr. Moses Gborgar were physically attacked by individuals identifying themselves as affiliates of the Global Methodist Church. The assailants—believed to be hired thugs—falsely accused the victims of homosexuality before launching their assault.
This deeply troubling incident followed a recent Circuit Court ruling, which overturned an earlier magistrate court decision that had ordered the closure of the church. The higher court affirmed that the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction, thereby legally permitting United Methodist congregants to resume worship. However, individuals aligned with the Global Methodist Church forcefully entered the premises, misrepresented the court’s ruling as being in their favor, and instigated violence.
We unequivocally denounce this lawless and provocative behavior, which constitutes a gross violation of human rights, an affront to religious freedom, and a threat to public peace and order. Such actions are both illegal and morally indefensible.
We call on Inspector General Gregory Coleman of the Liberia National Police to initiate an immediate and thorough investigation, and to ensure that all those involved in this act of violence are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Accountability is essential to preventing future acts of intolerance, hatred, and violence.
The Liberia Annual Conference stands in full solidarity with the congregation of New Georgia UMC and the broader United Methodist community. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to peace, justice, human dignity, and the right to worship freely across Liberia.
