MINES AND ENERGY TO REVAMP TECHNICAL STUDENTS PROGRAM

  • The once nationally relevant ‘Technical Students Program’ run by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) with the aim of providing school-grants to enable Liberians study in the fields of Geology, and Mining Engineering, is expected to be revamped by Government through the Mines and Energy Ministry; Minister Wilmot Paye has disclosed.

Speaking to scores of employees of the Ministry on Thursday, June 26, 2025, the Mines and Energy Minister divulged that the current team of administrators of the Ministry have placed the program under serious review and are considering reawakening the initiative when funds allocations are appropriate determined. “We are looking at various layers of the Technical Students Program. With the available funding, we will see at what level we can reintroduce it, but that was a very important initiative and we need to revamp it.” Minister Paye intoned.

The Minister said, the program was the Government’s way of making positive impact on the mineral sector career goals of many Liberians by giving them financial assistance through payment of their tuition at the University of Liberia. Through that means, mining sector students experienced some good level of convenience in their academic undertakings and were also given some level of job-placement assistance with exploration and mining companies upon completion of their studies.

Through the Technical Students Program, The Ministry of Mines and Energy, and the University of Liberia had an inter-governmental collaboration that produced some of the best Geologists and Mining Engineers currently working in the mining sector, some of whom rose to high ranks of Consultancy, and Instructors at Universities, while others are past and current officials of the Ministry of Mines and Energy in various capacities.

Minister Wilmot Paye also used the Friday gathering of all employees of the Ministry to thank them for their dedicated services and commitment to working assiduously in making sure the Ministry is on course with achieving performance targets espoused by the Government outlined in the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).
