Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County – August 27, 2025 – Grand Gedeh County Senator Zoe Emmanuel Pennue is facing mounting criticism after being accused of threatening the life of a political opponent ahead of the 2029 senatorial elections.
Melvin Kamara, a prominent critic of Senator Pennue’s leadership, took to social media this week alleging that the lawmaker threatened him and his family during a heated WhatsApp exchange. Kamara shared screenshots of the purported conversation, captioning his post: “You all share this post so it reaches the police. Zoe is threatening my family.”
According to Kamara, Senator Pennue warned him to “back off” or risk being killed. The allegations have since ignited public debate, with a newly formed advocacy group, “Say No To Zoe,” amplifying calls for accountability.
The group accused Senator Pennue of overstaying in the Legislature without delivering meaningful infrastructure development for the people of Grand Gedeh. Instead, they claim, the Senator has relied on what they describe as “hand-to-mouth politics”—offering small cash handouts, often not exceeding L$500 per person, as a form of appeasement.
“These threats show desperation,” the group said in a statement. “After decades in office, our county still lacks the roads, schools, and healthcare facilities we deserve.”
The accusations come at a sensitive time, as Senator Pennue prepares to defend his seat amid growing dissatisfaction among voters in the county. Critics argue that despite his long tenure, Grand Gedeh remains underdeveloped.
Efforts by Verity News to obtain Senator Pennue’s response proved unsuccessful. Multiple calls to his official phone line went unanswered, and text messages sent via WhatsApp—the same platform through which the alleged threats were made—received no reply. The Liberia National Police have yet to issue a statement on the matter.
