Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has voiced strong confidence that Ugandan opposition figure Bobi Wine will prevail in Uganda’s presidential election, despite what he characterized as sustained intimidation and institutional obstacles imposed by state authorities.
Speaking on the matter, Babu Owino argued that the prevailing political climate in Uganda falls far short of the standards required for a free and fair electoral process. He contended that the conditions under which Bobi Wine is campaigning are abnormal and indicative of systemic interference.
According to the Kenyan lawmaker, Bobi Wine has been compelled to conduct his campaign under intense security constraints, including routinely wearing bulletproof protection due to persistent threats to his life. Babu described this as a clear distortion of the democratic process, noting that security forces have repeatedly attempted to block the opposition candidate from accessing campaign venues—actions he said amount to violations of electoral laws.
Babu further maintained that the heavy deployment of police and restrictions on Bobi Wine’s movement suggest a deliberate strategy to undermine his campaign. He argued, however, that these measures have had the opposite effect, strengthening the opposition leader’s resolve and expanding his appeal, particularly among Uganda’s youth.
He also pointed to the reported shutdown of internet services during the election period as further evidence of what he described as electoral manipulation. Recounting a recent conversation with Bobi Wine, Babu said the decision to cut off digital communication signaled deeper concerns about transparency and state control over the electoral environment.
Using a metaphor to illustrate his point, Babu Owino suggested that political power tends to align with courage and youthfulness rather than age and inertia, portraying Bobi Wine as a symbol of generational change in Ugandan politics.
Despite the obstacles confronting the opposition campaign, Babu insisted that Bobi Wine remains politically resilient and enjoys broad-based national support. He concluded by reaffirming his belief that Bobi Wine is well positioned to win the presidential election, describing the contest as a defining moment for Uganda’s democratic future.
