Rep. Ellen Wreh Raises the Bar with Cash Support for Margibi Kickball Team

Margibi County — Celebration and renewed motivation filled the camp of the Margibi County kickball team on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when District #3 Representative Ellen Attoh Wreh honored a prior commitment with a cash donation of US$1,500 to the team, just days ahead of the National County Sports Meet grand final.

The donation followed an earlier understanding between the lawmaker and the players. According to team officials, the kickball squad had requested support for proper attire should they qualify for the grand final. Representative Wreh agreed to the terms, pledging to provide assistance if the team met its competitive target. With Margibi securing a spot in the final, the lawmaker moved quickly to fulfill her promise.

Presenting the cash at her residence along SDA Cooper Road, Rep. Wreh praised the team for its discipline and consistency, noting that their performance justified the confidence placed in them.

“I am here today because you kept your promise,” she told the players. “Congratulations. We are proud of you and hopeful that we will celebrate the championship together.”

The gesture was warmly received by the team. Speaking on behalf of the players, team member Ruth Sonpon expressed appreciation, describing the lawmaker’s support as both surprising and deeply encouraging.

“You have truly shown us motherly leadership,” Sonpon said. “This support means more to us than words can express.”

Observers note that this donation represents the most significant direct financial contribution made by Rep. Wreh to the Margibi kickball team to date. Her involvement, however, did not begin with this latest gesture. Following the team’s earlier victory over Grand Cape Mount County, the players paid an unscheduled visit to the lawmaker, during which she reportedly met with them personally, provided refreshments, and issued a US$45 fuel voucher to assist with transportation arranged through the Margibi Sports Association.

Sports analysts say Rep. Wreh’s actions place her among a small group of lawmakers who have offered tangible, direct support to county sports teams during the National County Sports Meet. Records indicate that she is the first sitting lawmaker in recent times to provide such assistance across sporting disciplines, recalling similar efforts by former District #2 Representative Ballah Zayzay during his tenure in the House of Representatives.

As the Margibi County kickball team prepares to face Grand Cape Mount County on Sunday, January 18, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, the political and symbolic weight of the donation remains part of the conversation. The final marks the second encounter between the two counties in this year’s tournament, with Margibi having edged Grand Cape Mount 1–0 in their earlier meeting to top their group during the quarterfinal stage.

Margibi county kickball team focus remains on the championship match

While the immediate focus remains on the championship match, Rep. Wreh’s intervention has sparked broader discussion about the role of elected officials in supporting women’s sports and youth development. For many in Margibi, the donation is being viewed not merely as campaign-style goodwill, but as a signal that consistent political backing can help elevate female athletes who often operate with limited resources.

Whether Margibi lifts the trophy or not, the moment has already set a new benchmark for legislative engagement with grassroots sports in the county.
