Abu Bana Kamara, a ranking member of the House of Representatives’ Rule of Law Caucus and representative for Montserrado County District 15, has rejected allegations that lawmakers, especially those in the opposition, are scheming to remove Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon from office, calling such reports false, misleading, and unfounded.
Speaking to reporters on Monday outside the opening of the 55th Legislature’s Third Session, Representative Kamara stressed that the House of Representatives is currently more concerned with advancing the legislative agenda of the Liberian people and addressing urgent national issues than it is with internal power struggles.
According to Rep. Kamara, Speaker Koon continues to enjoy the confidence and support of the majority of members of the House, a mandate he said lawmakers remain committed to respecting.
He stressed that there is no organized effort within the Legislature to undermine the Speaker’s leadership. “The House is working. Our attention is on national priorities and the business of the people, not on removing the Speaker,” Rep. Kamara stated, adding that speculation about any plot to unseat Speaker Koon should be disregarded.
In a related event, the vocal member said that he does not want to run for reelection when his current term in the House of Representatives expires. Rather, he stated that his future political activity would be concentrated on advocating for the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), specifically in favour of former President George Manneh Weah’s presidential campaign. Rep. Kamara’s comments coincide with political unrest and rumours about the House leadership.
But as the House begins its Third Session, his remarks seem to confirm the Legislature’s internal cohesion and indicate that Speaker Koon will continue to get support.
The 55th Legislature’s Third Session formally began on Monday, signifying the return of full legislative operations at Capitol Hill. In the coming months, parliamentarians are anticipated to discuss important national issues, governance changes, and development goals.
