The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) has begun the distribution of food items valued at more than US$50,000 to vulnerable populations across eight counties in Liberia.
Mr. Elton S. Dickson, Deputy Director General for Operations, told the gathering that the distribution was for the vulnerable population in Grand Bassa, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Bong, Margibi, Grand Gedeh, Nimba, and Maryland counties. According to him, the drill was a component of the government’s larger initiative to combat food insecurity across the country.
Mr. Dickson added that the program’s main goal is to lessen street begging, which he claimed compromised the dignity and self-worth of those who are impacted. He underscored that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s government has strengthened the National Food Assistance Agency to assist and address these socioeconomic issues.
Meanwhile, during the distribution in Pleebo and Harper cities, Dickson explained that the program is supported by the Government of Liberia and funded by International Organizations and, at times, non-governmental organizations, all coordinated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to him, the activities in Pleebo and Harper was on January 10, 2026, and occasionally done by non-governmental organisations。

Additionally, Dickson said that will be done regularly by providing food assistance to underprivileged, those with disabilities, the blind, and other vulnerable populations throughout Liberia’s 15 counties.
At them same time he added that Maryland County, the distribution encompassed a number of institutions in Pleebo and other organizations, such as the Harper Central Prison, the Pleebo Health Centre, and senior residents. Supporting the jail, he noted, is meant to lessen the strain of feeding prisoners, both those serving sentences and those awaiting trial.
Additionally, Mr. Dickson disclosed that the current batch of food items was sponsored by the African Union, an international organisation, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being sent to the National Food Assistance Agency to lessen stress caused by hunger among vulnerable populations.
He also highlighted that food supplies delivered to the Pleebo Health Center are specifically intended for patients who require nourishment before undergoing medical treatment, noting that health practitioners often advise patients to eat prior to certain procedures.
However, a significant number of elderly residents in Pleebo City benefited from the distribution, an intervention described as the first of its kind in the history of the Pleebo City Corporation.

In respond, Pleebo City Mayor Larry G. Geekor, on behalf of the local government, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NFAA. He described the gesture as timely and historic, particularly during his tenure under the Joseph Nyuma Boakai administration.
Mr. Geekor disclosed that the disabled community in Pleebo are about 185 members, adding that the food assistance would go a long way in improving their welfare. However, he cautioned the leadership of the disabled community to ensure fair and equitable distribution of the items among members to avoid misunderstandings or conflict.
