The National Elections Commission (NEC) has successfully transported a substantial consignment consisting of 500 Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits to the headquarters of the National Identification Registry (NIR) located in Congo Town.
This endeavor constitutes part of a strategic partnership between the two entities, aimed at strengthening the national registry’s capacity to carry out extensive citizen enrollment throughout Liberia.
The consignment, which includes essential equipment such as computers and solar panels, was dispatched following a recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Monrovia, an event attended by government officials and significant stakeholders.
The MoU was formalized at the NEC headquarters situated in Sinkor, with Madam Davidetta Browne Lassanna, the head of NEC, and Andrew Peters, the head of NIR, as the principal signatories.
Prior to the transportation of the kits, a joint technical committee undertook a thorough assessment of the NIR’s ICT infrastructure in order to address and rectify any logistical challenges present.
In an interview, Andrew Peters emphasized the success of this collaboration, noting the essential role these kits will play in improving enrollment operations in the future.
While experts foresee the necessity for some modifications to the kits to ensure full integration, this move represents a pivotal advancement in addressing technical shortcomings that have previously hampered the issuance of citizen identification cards.
The deployment of BVR kits, which was effectively employed by the NEC during the voter registration process in 2023, is anticipated to considerably boost the operational capacity of the NIR as it prepares to recommence its enrollment activities in the near future.
