The Chairman of the Liberty Party Youth League in Grand Bassa County, Garnida Lawrence Dapeeda James, has called on Superintendent Karyou Johnson to take decisive action regarding the controversial iron ore tailing agreement with Steelfort Mining Company.
In a letter addressed to Superintendent Johnson, James expressed deep concern over the lack of updates from the county administration after Steel fort reportedly deposited an initial US$400,000 and a subsequent US$100,000 into the county’s account, despite questions surrounding the company’s mining license.
The youth leader noted that although the agreement was signed before Superintendent Johnson assumed office, the responsibility now rests with him to address the matter transparently by engaging relevant government agencies and informing citizens of ongoing developments.
James alleged that the deal was orchestrated by Senator Gbehzohngar Findley, Chairman of the Grand Bassa Legislative Caucus, in collaboration with the Minister of Internal Affairs, without proper clearance from the Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy, the statutory body overseeing mining activities in Liberia.
He further criticized Superintendent Johnson’s recent remarks during the Flag Day celebrations, where the Superintendent reportedly urged lawmakers to “stop the argument” over the legality of the deal. James warned that such statements send the wrong message to young people seeking accountability and credible leadership.
In his communication, James posed several pressing questions, including: The current status of the US$500,000 received from Steelfort, Whether the company is legally authorized to operate in Grand Bassa What level of coordination is being pursued with the Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy.
How the Superintendent intends to safeguard the county’s interests going forward. James concluded by urging Superintendent Johnson to play a proactive role in resolving the controversy and to ensure transparency in all county-related matters.
