Foya, Lofa County – The Government of Liberia has announced the completion of the country’s first-ever Digital Village, a landmark project located in Foya, Lofa County, that promises to transform access to energy, internet, and education in the region.
The state-of-the-art facility, made possible through support from Huawei Technologies, is designed to provide green energy internet connectivity to more than 50 homes and institutions, including schools, hospitals, clinics, churches, mosques, and other community facilities within a 2.5-kilometer radius.
In addition to connectivity, the Digital Village will deliver free solar electricity to over 100 households in Foya District, significantly reducing energy costs while promoting the use of renewable energy. Local officials say this component of the project is expected to greatly improve the quality of life for residents, particularly those in rural areas who have long struggled with limited or unreliable access to power.
Another major feature of the Digital Village is its focus on education. The facility will host “smart classrooms” equipped with modern teaching tools and internet access, giving students exposure to new digital learning methods. Authorities believe this will strengthen Liberia’s education system by preparing young people with the skills they need to compete in a rapidly advancing digital economy.
At the handover of the facility, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Cllr. Sekou Kromah, hailed the project as a milestone in Liberia’s digital transformation. He expressed gratitude to Huawei for sponsoring the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing technology and connectivity nationwide.
“This is a proud moment for Liberia,” Minister Kromah said. “The completion of the Digital Village shows what is possible when government partners with global technology leaders to create opportunities for our people. We will continue to engage international partners to ensure that our telecommunication sector is developed in the best way possible.”
He further emphasized that the achievement reflects the government’s vision to harness the power of technology to drive development, stimulate innovation, and improve service delivery across the country.
