Monrovia — A recent audit by the General Auditing Commission (GAC) has revealed a troubling discrepancy of more than US$9.5 million between reported expenditures by the Liberian Judiciary and actual disbursements recorded by the Ministry of Finance between 2018 and 2023.
The financial gap totaling US$9,531,920.92 – raises serious concerns about potential mismanagement and fraud. The bulk of the unaccounted funds, more than US$7.3 million, dates back to the 2018–2019 fiscal period under former Chief Justice Francis Korkpor. His successor, Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh, took over as the audit period came to a close.
The GAC report points to significant weaknesses within the Judiciary’s Budget and Accounting Departments, citing risks such as ghost budgeting, inaccurate financial reporting, and a general lack of transparency.
Mounting public pressure is now forcing both the Judiciary and the Ministry of Finance to account for the missing funds and implement reforms to prevent future misuse.
This revelation comes amid growing public demand for transparency and accountability, particularly from institutions tasked with upholding the rule of law.
