FUTA Celebrates 36th Convocation: 240 Students Earn First Class Honours as VC Highlights Global Impact and Institutional Growth

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), is set to celebrate academic excellence and institutional progress as it holds its 36th Convocation Ceremony, during which 240 students will graduate with First Class Honours.

Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji announced this on Friday, November 7, 2025, during a press briefing ahead of the convocation, underscoring the university’s commitment to academic distinction, innovation, and global relevance.

Out of 2,747 undergraduates who will receive first degrees, 1,479 will graduate with Second Class Upper, 912 with Second Class Lower, and 116 with Third Class. The star of the 2025 graduating class is Akindunbi Aduragbemi Isaac, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, who emerged as the Best Graduating Student with an impressive CGPA of 4.98 out of 5.00. He will deliver the valedictory address on Friday, November 14, 2025.

Postgraduate Achievements and Academic Excellence

Professor Oladiji also announced that 867 postgraduate students will receive higher degrees during the ceremony on Saturday, November 15, 2025. This includes 86 Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), 627 Master of Technology (MTech), and 154 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) awards—marking another milestone in FUTA’s growing research and academic output.

The Convocation Lecture, titled “Strategies and Tactics for Solving Skills Challenges in Nigeria: The Roles of Government, Institutions, and the Youth,” will be delivered by Prince Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN), a former Attorney General, Minister of Justice, and Minister of Labour.

“FUTA at the Next Level”: Building a Sustainable Academic Future

Speaking under the theme FUTA at the Next Level,” the vice chancellor reflected on the university’s trajectory, describing the past three years as a period of transformation, sustainability, and global integration.

“FUTA has been successfully repositioned for a sustainable future,” she said. “Our administration has built a foundation rooted in academic excellence, financial sustainability, global competitiveness, and inclusive growth. This future empowers staff, inspires students, strengthens communities, and projects Nigeria on the global map of innovation and research.”

Professor Oladiji emphasized FUTA’s strengthened global presence through research collaborations and international exchanges, noting faculty and researchers’ recent study visits to Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany. These partnerships, she said, have deepened expertise and fostered cross-border knowledge sharing.

Expanding Global Influence Through Partnerships

The vice chancellor highlighted FUTA’s active collaborations with industries, research institutions, and international partners, which have expanded the university’s global footprint. She cited partnerships with Green Energy International Limited and LekOil Joint Venture (JV) under the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

The five-year joint research initiative focuses on hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in the Otakikpo Field, Niger Delta, with FUTA researchers serving as lead investigators—an example of academia-industry synergy driving national development.

She further noted that FUTA’s achievements in patents, research, innovation, and sports underscore its growing reputation both locally and internationally.

Government Support and Institutional Advancement

Professor Oladiji expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Visitor to the university, for recent government interventions that have elevated FUTA’s profile. These include the approval of a teaching hospital for medical and allied training, a ₦1 billion federal special intervention for agricultural commercial farming, and the National Student Loan Fund (NELFUND), which supports financially challenged students.

“These initiatives will not only strengthen FUTA’s academic capacity but also contribute to national goals such as food security and human capital development,” she said. Commendations and Closing Reflections

Professor Oladiji praised the university’s staff, students, alumni, and governing council for their collective efforts in fostering peace, innovation, and growth. She singled out the Governing Council, chaired by Senator Nora Daduut, for its steadfast leadership and collaboration.

“FUTA is now a key player in the global academic arena,” she concluded. “We are living up to our reputation as one of Nigeria’s foremost citadels of learning, where cutting-edge research and innovation are not exceptions but norms. As we celebrate our 36th Convocation, we reaffirm our mission to nurture excellence and impact society positively.”

As FUTA marks this milestone, the university stands as a model of sustained academic achievement and visionary leadership, reinforcing its status as Nigeria’s leading university of technology and a beacon of innovation in Africa.
