EPA Unveils New Headquarters and Modern Laboratory to Strengthen Environmental Oversight

The Government of Liberia, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has officially dedicated its newly acquired headquarters along with a state-of-the-art environmental laboratory, marking a significant milestone in the agency’s institutional development and environmental management efforts.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony, EPA Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo emphasized that the establishment of the new facilities followed extensive internal consultations with EPA staff and stakeholders. According to him, the vision for a purpose-driven workspace had long been part of the EPA’s strategic goal to enhance operational efficiency and align with the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

“This building is a product of collaborative thinking, and we are proud to dedicate a structure that is not only functional but also symbolizes our commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s environment,” Dr. Yarkpawolo said.

He disclosed that the approval process for acquiring the property is currently underway through the EPA Board of Directors. Once finalized, the building will serve as the permanent headquarters of the agency, offering a professional space that meets both environmental and administrative standards.

In addition to the headquarters, Dr. Yarkpawolo also announced the completion of a modern environmental laboratory valued at USD 100,000. He described the facility as a “game-changer” in advancing environmental science and policy implementation in Liberia. The lab is expected to support a wide range of testing capabilities—from air and water quality assessments to chemical analysis—empowering the agency to enforce environmental regulations more effectively.

“The lab gives us the capacity to conduct sophisticated environmental testing, which is essential for data-driven decision-making,” he added.

The dedication ceremony was attended by several high-ranking government officials, including Liberia’s Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung, who commended the EPA leadership for its bold steps toward institutional modernization.

“I extend sincere thanks to Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo and his senior management team for the remarkable leadership that made today possible,” Vice President Koung said.

He revealed that the government had invested approximately USD 75,000 in renovating the new EPA building to ensure it complies fully with environmental, safety, and accessibility standards.

“What we are witnessing today is not just a new office complex, but a reflection of our national values—accountability, transparency, and sustainability,” he noted.

The Vice President encouraged continued collaboration between the EPA and other government institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners to address the country’s growing environmental challenges.

The launch of the new EPA headquarters and laboratory comes at a time when environmental protection is increasingly vital due to urbanization, climate change, and rising pollution levels in Liberia. The new infrastructure is expected to enhance the agency’s ability to implement policies, monitor environmental impacts, and engage communities across the country.

As the EPA transitions into this new chapter, stakeholders are hopeful that the investment in infrastructure will be matched by continued improvements in policy enforcement, scientific research, and interagency coordination.
