China, Liberia Break Ground for Two Overpass Bridges on Tubman Boulevard

Monrovia, September 2, 2025 – The Government of China and Liberia on Tuesday broke ground for the construction of two overpass bridges on Tubman Boulevard, a project expected to transform urban transportation in Monrovia and ease decades of traffic congestion.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu described the initiative as a historic milestone in China-Liberia cooperation, highlighting it as one of the tangible outcomes of the elevated strategic partnership between the two countries following last year’s Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

“Although China and Liberia are thousands of miles apart, our hearts are closely linked,” Ambassador Yin said. “These two flyovers are not just bridges of transportation but also bridges of friendship and win-win cooperation between our peoples.”

The ambassador emphasized that road infrastructure has long been a bottleneck to Liberia’s development, limiting both economic growth and the daily lives of citizens. He praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s prioritization of road construction under the government’s ARREST agenda, calling it a clear demonstration of foresight and dedication to improving livelihoods.

The two flyovers, strategically located along Tubman Boulevard—the busiest corridor in Monrovia—are expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency, and support economic expansion once completed. Ambassador Yin noted that the project will directly enhance the lives of ordinary Liberians, while also serving as a cornerstone for the modernization of the country’s transport network.

Construction will be carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), a globally renowned engineering contractor with extensive experience in major infrastructure projects across multiple continents. According to the ambassador, CRBC was selected through a “transparent, competitive, and rigorous” bidding process, underscoring Beijing’s commitment to high-quality standards and accountability.

The 24-month project will be closely monitored for quality, safety, and timely completion. Ambassador Yin urged CRBC to strictly follow regulations and contractual obligations, while also calling on Liberia’s Ministries, Agencies, and Commissions to provide necessary support and security to ensure smooth implementation.

“This project not only reflects our traditional friendship but also injects new momentum into Liberia’s economic and social development,” he said.

The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Liberian government officials including Minister of Public Works Roland Giddings, marked a new phase of cooperation under the China-Liberia strategic partnership. Officials on both sides expressed optimism that the overpasses will stand as a lasting symbol of bilateral friendship and shared progress.

Once completed, the Tubman Boulevard overpasses are expected to ease congestion in Monrovia’s busiest traffic zones, boost commerce, and further cement China’s role as a leading development partner in Liberia.
