Monrovia, Liberia – The Ministry of Justice, through its Department of Rehabilitation, has suspended Monrovia Central Prison Medical Coordinator Foldela Sugar Kwaidah amid allegations of extorting thousands of dollars from inmates’ families in exchange for false promises of release.
Sources told DN-News Liberia that Kwaidah allegedly solicited payments by claiming she could secure inmates’ freedom through Executive Clemency or medical leave. Clemency, granted by the President during major holidays, recently left out many inmates whose families had reportedly paid bribes, sparking outrage and a formal complaint.
Assistant Minister for Rehabilitation Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupellar confirmed Kwaidah’s indefinite suspension pending investigation but declined further comment, citing security protocols.
Sources allege Kwaidah began these practices during her father’s tenure as Bureau of Corrections Director. She has not responded to requests for comment.
