Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – August 19, 2025 — The Bassa Sports Association (BSA) has formally presented its proposed budget for the upcoming 2025/2026 National County Sports Meet, seeking support from the county leadership to ensure Grand Bassa’s strong participation in Liberia’s most celebrated sporting festival.
At a ceremony held Tuesday in the Administrative Building in Buchanan, BSA executives, led by Chairman Abraham Willie, submitted a comprehensive budget totaling US$213,967.44 to County Superintendent Hon. Karyou Johnson. The proposed funding covers football, kickball, basketball, field preparation, media coverage, operational expenses, and a contingency fund.
According to the breakdown, football accounts for the largest share at US$100,380.00, followed by kickball with US$61,245.00, basketball at US$29,147.00, field preparation at US$4,000.00, and media coverage at US$3,000.00. Operational expenses across all disciplines are projected at US$12,000.00, while a contingency fund of US$4,195.44 represents two percent of the overall budget.
Presenting the budget, Chairman Willie highlighted the importance of adequate investment in sports, stressing that Team Bassa’s performance in the tournament depends heavily on timely preparation and resource mobilization. He said the county’s participation is not only about competition but also about promoting unity, talent discovery, and community pride.
“This budget represents our best effort to put forward competitive teams in all disciplines,” Willie explained. “Grand Bassa has the talent and the passion; what we need now is the financial support to translate that into trophies.”
In his response, Superintendent Johnson praised the BSA’s commitment and reaffirmed his administration’s determination to support Team Bassa’s quest for glory. He pledged to present the budget to the Grand Bassa Legislative Caucus for immediate review and consideration.
“We are ready to fully support our teams to ensure Bassa brings back the trophies,” Johnson declared. “This is about more than just sports – it’s about county pride, youth development, and community spirit.”
Johnson also called on citizens of Grand Bassa at home and abroad to rally behind their teams. He encouraged local businesses, diaspora groups, and community leaders to contribute financially and morally to ensure Team Bassa enters the tournament well-prepared.
The National County Sports Meet, organized annually by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, is Liberia’s premier inter-county sporting event. It brings together athletes from all 15 counties in a celebration of sportsmanship, culture, and national unity. Over the years, the tournament has become a major platform for discovering new talent, some of whom have gone on to represent Liberia at national and international levels.
For Grand Bassa, the County Meet is not just a sporting event but a rallying point for community identity and development. As preparations gather pace, residents are hopeful that with proper funding and united support, Team Bassa will rise to the occasion in the 2025/2026 edition of the games.
With the formal budget submission now complete, the BSA looks forward to swift approval and resource mobilization to begin full preparations for the tournament.
