CDC Secretary-General and Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee has issued a sharply worded and politically charged statement, accusing Liberia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis Sakila Nyumalin Sr., of actions that could destabilize regional peace and undermine state authority.
In the statement, Koijee links rising tensions at the Sorlumba border to what he describes as Nyumalin’s alleged involvement in illicit cross-border mining activities along the Makona River. According to the claim, dredging equipment connected to these operations was seized by Guinean authorities after being used within Guinea’s territory—raising serious concerns about violations of sovereignty and international law.
Koijee argues that the situation escalated unnecessarily when, instead of pursuing diplomatic or legal channels following the seizure, the response allegedly shifted toward confrontation. He characterizes this approach as reckless, warning that it risks inflaming tensions between Liberia and Guinea.
Framing the issue as one that transcends routine political disagreement, Koijee suggests that the implications are national and regional in scope. He contends that Liberia’s post-conflict stability—achieved after years of civil unrest—should not be jeopardized by the alleged actions of a single public official. His remarks imply a broader concern about governance, accountability, and the exercise of state power.
The statement further intensifies by calling for immediate action against Nyumalin, including dismissal, arrest, and prosecution. These demands are tied not only to the alleged illegal mining activities but also to a separate and serious accusation involving sexual misconduct. Koijee asserts that evidence exists to support these claims, though such allegations remain matters for formal investigation and due process.
In a politically provocative tone, Koijee also directs criticism at the current administration, warning against what he portrays as the protection of political allies at the expense of national interest. He emphasizes that citizens and political stakeholders will resist any trajectory that could draw Liberia into conflict or erode democratic accountability.
While the claims outlined in the statement are significant, they remain allegations that require independent verification. The situation underscores the need for transparent investigation, adherence to the rule of law, and careful diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation.
At its core, the controversy reflects deeper tensions within Liberia’s political landscape—where questions of governance, resource control, and institutional integrity continue to shape public discourse.
