The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has taken a significant step toward strengthening Liberia’s fisheries sector by launching a new official website and conducting a refresher training for accredited journalists ahead of the country’s upcoming National Fisheries Investment Conference, widely known as KPONGAMA.
According to NaFAA officials, the initiatives are part of broader efforts to improve public communication, deepen collaboration with the media, and enhance national and international awareness about investment opportunities in Liberia’s fisheries and aquaculture industry.
The highly anticipated KPONGAMA Conference is scheduled to take place from March 30 to March 31, 2026, at the Farmington Hotel, where policymakers, investors, development partners, and fisheries experts are expected to gather to explore strategies for expanding Liberia’s fisheries economy.
Speaking during the launch, NaFAA Director General J. Cyrus Saygbe, Sr. emphasized that the introduction of the authority’s new website marks an important milestone in modernizing the institution’s communication and information-sharing systems.
He explained that the digital platform will serve as a central hub for stakeholders seeking information about Liberia’s fisheries sector. The website will provide access to critical resources including fisheries policies, licensing procedures, statistical data, development programs, and updates related to the KPONGAMA conference.
According to Saygbe, improving access to accurate and timely information is essential for attracting investors and strengthening transparency within the sector.
In addition to the website launch, NaFAA organized a specialized refresher training session for journalists who will be responsible for covering the upcoming conference. The training focused on equipping media professionals with a deeper understanding of fisheries governance, sector challenges, and investment opportunities.
Officials say the initiative aims to ensure balanced, informed, and impactful media coverage that highlights the importance of fisheries and aquaculture to Liberia’s economic future.
The KPONGAMA Conference—named after a Kpelleh term meaning “group gathering”—is designed to showcase the country’s fisheries sector as a key driver of economic growth and sustainable development.
Organizers say the conference will highlight investment opportunities across several critical areas, including aquaculture development, seafood processing, cold storage facilities, fisheries infrastructure, and value chain expansion.
By bringing together government institutions, private investors, and international partners, Liberia hopes to unlock the full potential of its vast marine and inland water resources while creating jobs and strengthening food security.
NaFAA believes that strengthening communication through digital platforms and building stronger partnerships with the media will play a crucial role in promoting Liberia’s fisheries sector and attracting the investment needed to modernize the industry.
