Koijee Alleges Plot to Bar George Weah from 2029 Election, Calls Proposed “Anti‑Corruption” Law a Political Weapon

Monrovia — Monrovia City Mayor and Secretary General of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson T. Koijee, has accused the Unity Party–led government of plotting to block former President George M. Weah from contesting the 2029 presidential election through what he described as a “criminal amendment” disguised as reform.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his social media page, Koijee alleged that the amendment to Title 2 of Liberia’s Criminal Procedure Law was secretly drafted and submitted to the National Legislature as part of what he called a “grand conspiracy to silence the opposition.”

“This so‑called ‘anti‑corruption reform’ is a dangerous and deceptive bill that dismantles citizens’ protections against political persecution,” Koijee declared. “It removes vital legal safeguards and expands prosecutorial powers in ways that threaten democracy and individual freedoms.”

Koijee further claimed that the measure, if enacted, would give the ruling establishment sweeping authority to weaponize the justice system and fabricate charges aimed at indicting former President Weah, thereby barring him from the 2029 elections.

Describing the proposed amendment as a “calculated move by the Boakai‑Koung regime to destabilize the nation,” he warned that such legislative maneuvers risk plunging Liberia back into chaos by eroding public confidence in the rule of law.

“Liberia knows too well the dangers of politicized justice,” he added. “We must never allow oppressive laws to return under the false promise of reform.”

Koijee’s statement, which included excerpts of the proposed legal amendment, called on Liberians to remain vigilant and defend democratic freedoms. He vowed that the CDC would resist any attempt to undermine the rights of its political leaders or to restrict fair participation in future elections.

The controversy has begun to stir debate within legal and political circles, with observers noting that the issue could become a defining flashpoint between the ruling Unity Party and the main opposition ahead of 2029.
