Education Is the Real Power: KRTTI Directress Urges Liberia to Invest in Girls at International Women’s Day Celebration

A strong call for investment in girls’ education and women’s empowerment took Center stage in Margibi County as Sorna Sherif, Directress of the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute (KRTTI), addressed a gathering marking International Women’s Day.

Speaking as the guest speaker at the county celebration, Sherif emphasized that meaningful national development cannot happen without prioritizing the advancement of women and girls. The event, held under the theme “Give to Gain – Supporting Women’s Development,” brought together community leaders, women’s organizations, youth groups, and development partners across Margibi County.

The program was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through the Office of the County Coordinator in collaboration with local women’s groups and supporting partners.

In her keynote address, Sherif stressed that societies that invest in women ultimately secure stronger communities and sustainable progress. She noted that empowering women is not only a social responsibility but also a strategic investment in the future.

“Today’s theme reminds us of a powerful truth,” Sherif told the audience. “When we invest in women, we invest in the future of our communities, our nation, and our world.”

The KRTTI Directress placed particular emphasis on education as the most effective tool for transforming the lives of girls. According to her, providing girls with quality education equips them with the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.

She explained that the impact of educating girls extends beyond individual success and benefits entire communities.

“When we give education to girls, we gain an empowered generation,” Sherif said. “An educated girl grows into a woman who can make informed decisions, contribute to economic growth, and support the education of her own children.”

Sherif also urged government institutions, development partners, and community leaders to work together in creating opportunities that allow women and girls to reach their full potential.

As Liberia joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, she encouraged women to remain resilient in their pursuit of equal opportunities in education, leadership, and economic participation.

The event also honored several women recognized for their contributions to women’s empowerment and community development in Margibi County. Among those celebrated was Ellen A. Attoh-Wreh, Representative of District #3 in Margibi County, alongside other respected figures including Madam Julia Blama, Mot. Esther J.S. Clarke, and Rev. Mot. Martha Sayklon.

Participants at the program reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening initiatives that promote gender equality and enhance the role of women in Liberia’s development.

The celebration concluded with renewed calls for stronger collaboration between government institutions, civil society groups, and local communities to ensure that women’s voices remain central in shaping Liberia’s future.
