Bea Mountain Trains Liberia’s First Mine Rescue Team

Liberia’s mining industry has reached a new safety milestone as Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) graduated the country’s first group of professionally trained mine rescuers, marking a significant step toward strengthening emergency response capacity within the sector.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Camp David Recreation Center at the New Liberty Gold Mine in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount County, celebrated 14 Liberian workers who completed a rigorous year-long training program designed to prepare them for emergency rescue operations in mining environments.

The event brought together senior management, department heads, members of the workers’ union, supervisors, and employees from across the company to recognize the achievement of the newly trained rescue team.

Speaking during the ceremony, Operations Manager Engin Turhan praised the graduates for their dedication and resilience throughout the demanding training process. He also commended the company’s Health and Safety Department for its role in developing local talent and building a culture of safety within the mining operation.

Turhan noted that the Mine Rescue Unit will play a critical role in emergency preparedness, emphasizing that the team will be among the first responders should an incident occur at the mine site.

The training initiative has been widely welcomed by employees and labor representatives. Paul B. Wah, Chairman of the BMMC Workers Union, expressed appreciation to the company’s management for investing in the professional development of Liberian workers.

According to Wah, the program demonstrates the company’s commitment to empowering local employees with specialized skills while setting a new standard for safety within Liberia’s mining sector.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, team leader Anthony Moses Vincent described the experience as both challenging and historic. He said the training required determination and endurance, noting that several participants who initially enrolled were unable to complete the demanding program.

Vincent credited the instructors and departmental supervisors for guiding the team through the process and helping them acquire new technical skills that were previously unfamiliar to many of the trainees.

The Mine Rescue training program lasted 12 months and included more than 300 hours of both practical and theoretical instruction. Participants completed specialized modules covering underground search and rescue operations, underground firefighting, hazardous chemical response, traffic accident management, and surface firefighting techniques.

Company officials say the curriculum was developed in line with international mining safety standards to ensure that the team can effectively respond to emergencies in complex mining environments.

The Mine Rescue Team was officially established by BMMC in January 2025 as part of the company’s broader strategy to enhance occupational safety and strengthen emergency preparedness at its operations.

Following the successful graduation of the first cohort, the company plans to begin recruiting and training additional mine rescuers in the coming months as it prepares to launch second and third batches of the program.

Industry observers say the initiative represents a major step forward for Liberia’s mining sector, signaling a growing emphasis on professional safety standards and local workforce development.
